Removal of Corns and Calluses
Causes, Symptoms and Treatment of Corns and Calluses
Corns and calluses are common foot conditions that can cause discomfort and, if left unaddressed, may lead to more serious complications. It is important for us to understand the causes, preventative care and treatment options that we can offer in order to maintain healthy and pain free feet.
Corns and calluses are thickened, hardened layers of skin that develop in response to friction and pressure. While they share similarities, they differ in their location and appearance:
Corns
Typically smaller and more localized, corns have a hard centre surrounded by inflamed skin. They often form on the tops or sides of toes, as well as on the soles of the feet.
Callus
Larger and broader than corns, calluses are generally found on the soles of the feet, especially under the heels or balls. They have a more even thickness and may be less painful than corns.
Causes
The primary cause of corns and calluses is repeated friction and pressure on the skin. Common contributing factors include:
- Ill Fitting Footwear
- Foot Deformities such as hammertoes and bunions
- Biomechanical Issues
- Lack of Support and Cushioning
Prevention
Preventing corns and calluses involves addressing the underlying causes and adopting proactive measures:
- Correctly Fitted Footwear
- Routine Care
- Orthotic Insoles
